Maryam Turgynbai, a first-year student of the Applied Artificial Intelligence program at the Department of Information Technology and Library Science of the Institute of Physics, Mathematics, and Digital Technologies, won a bronze medal at the 7th Asian Togyzkumalak Championship.

The tournament, held in the U-14 and U-19 categories, brought together the best athletes from across Asia. Maryam demonstrated a high level of performance and took third place in her age category.

The student shared her impressions of the competition: “My main goal was to take first place. When I got third, I felt that with a bit more preparation, I could have won,” says Maryam. “I have been playing Togyzkumalak since I was 8 years old. My father showed me this game for the first time — he was my first coach.”

Maryam also spoke about the significance of Togyzkumalak in her life: “For me, it’s not just a game. It has given me incredible opportunities. At every competition, I learn, make new friends, and develop my logical thinking,” she notes.

Regarding her future plans, Maryam says: “My goal is to be the best in my field and continue practicing the national game of Togyzkumalak as a hobby while teaching it to children. In 2026, I want to become the U-19 champion in classic, rapid, and blitz formats.”

Maryam especially highlighted the support of the university: “The university motivates me to pursue Togyzkumalak. All the necessary conditions for studying, clubs, and development programs are provided here. I am grateful to all the teachers for their support!” she says.

QyzPU congratulates Maryam Turgynbai on her international achievement and wishes her continued success in both academics and sports!
