Meruert Makazhanova, a 2nd-year student of the Visual Arts, Artistic Labour, Graphics, and Design educational program at the Kazakh National Women's Teacher Training University, participated in the "Alaman - Kurak" World Competition held in the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, under the guidance of Master and Practical Lecturer Gulnaz Tokabayeva. They entered the "2026 Guinness World Records" with their work and were awarded a letter of appreciation, a certificate, and a breast badge.
This project was organized in Ust-Kamenogorsk to mark the International Day of Families. The primary goal of the event is to promote the Kazakh traditional art of patchwork (kurak), honor national values, strengthen the continuity of generations, and enhance cultural ties between regions.
As part of the event, 788 patchwork artisans from 17 regions of the country sewed a giant patchwork blanket (kurpe) over two kilometers long with an area of more than two square kilometers at the "Shygys Altai" stadium, entering it into the international book of records. Each patchwork piece reflects Kazakh ornaments, national flavor, and regional characteristics.
Overall, kurak is one of the ancient crafts in Kazakh culture, serving as a symbol of thriftiness, craftsmanship, and family warmth.
Following the completion of the cultural project, the prepared blankets will be donated to the "Umit" children's home, a mosque, and a museum.
