Department of Special Pedagogy

The Department of was established by an order dated 11 September 2008 under the name Department of Special and Social Pedagogy. Since its establishment, its activities have focused on preparing teaching professionals for the country's special and inclusive education systems, advancing research in special pedagogy, and introducing evidence-based approaches into educational practice.
Today, the Department delivers educational programmes aimed at developing the professional competencies of future specialists by integrating established scholarly and pedagogical expertise in special pedagogy with contemporary educational requirements.
Mission of the Department: The mission of the Department is to prepare professionally competent and socially responsible special education teachers with a strong research culture who can create conditions for quality education, socialisation, and full participation in society for individuals with special educational needs, taking into account their individual characteristics and educational requirements.
The Department's strategic priorities include enhancing the quality of special and inclusive education, introducing innovative pedagogical technologies, strengthening the practical relevance of academic research, and fostering professional collaboration with educational institutions.
Educational Programmes: The Department provides professional preparation at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Bachelor's Degree:
- 6В01904 – Special Pedagogy.
Master's Degree:
- 7М01901 – Special Pedagogy;
- 7М01902 – Special Pedagogy: Support for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (IP).
The educational programmes are designed to equip future specialists with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in special pedagogy, speech and language therapy, psychological and pedagogical assessment, inclusive education, and remedial and developmental interventions. During their studies, students develop competencies in identifying the developmental characteristics of children with special educational needs, assessing their educational requirements, designing individual development programmes, organising remedial and developmental interventions, and collaborating within multidisciplinary professional teams.
Research Activities: Research is one of the key areas of the Department's work. Academic staff investigate current challenges in special and inclusive education, prepare scholarly and methodological publications, participate in academic conferences and seminars, and promote the application of research findings in educational practice.
The Department's research encompasses the cognitive, speech and language, and social-communication development of children with special educational needs; the improvement of psychological and pedagogical assessment instruments; the application of speech therapy and remedial and developmental approaches; comprehensive support for children with autism spectrum disorders; and the development of inclusive educational environments.
Particular emphasis is placed on developing the research potential of undergraduate and master's students through their participation in research projects, preparation of scholarly articles, presentation of findings at scientific and practical conferences, and enhancement of professional research skills.
Practical Training and Professional Collaboration: The Department prioritises the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. During teaching placements and professional internships, students become familiar with inclusive practices in special and mainstream educational institutions, systems of psychological and pedagogical support, and the activities of correctional and rehabilitation centres.
The Department seeks to strengthen professional links with educational institutions and specialists in special education and psychological and pedagogical support, enhance the practice-oriented content of its programmes, and promote the exchange of pedagogical experience.
International Cooperation and Academic Development: A key priority of the Department is to engage with the international academic community, examine international experience in special pedagogy, and expand academic and research collaboration.
This includes promoting academic mobility, joint research initiatives, international conferences and academic seminars, as well as expanding opportunities for the professional development of academic staff.
Professional Opportunities for Graduates: Graduates may pursue professional careers in special and mainstream schools, preschool institutions, centres for psychological and pedagogical intervention, psychological and pedagogical support services, rehabilitation and development centres, and other educational institutions.
