As part of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Institute of Natural Sciences and the Department of Biology, on the initiative of teachers of the discipline "Ecology and Sustainable Development", organized the Earth Hour 60+ campaign together with first-year students of the educational program "Chemistry". The event was held with the aim of raising environmental awareness and responsibility at the local level.
The Earth Hour 60+ campaign is held annually under the auspices of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The initiative was first implemented in 2007 in Sydney (Australia) and has since turned into a global environmental movement. The main idea of the campaign is to draw attention to the problem of climate change and the importance of careful treatment of natural resources.
To draw the attention of society to the need for careful treatment of nature and the planet's resources, as well as to form a culture of rational consumption of electricity is the main goal of the campaign. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the role of each person in the fight against climate change. As part of the event, the university's academic buildings and dormitories symbolically switched off their lights, demonstrating their commitment to energy-saving ideas. In support of the global initiative, the lights of significant architectural monuments were also switched off. In addition, students planted marigolds (Tagetes spp.) on the university grounds, grown as part of practical classes. This step was aimed at improving the urban ecosystem and supporting biodiversity.
Temporary reduction in electricity consumption helps reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, and planting green spaces helps reduce soil erosion, cleans the air and improves the urban microclimate.
The organization of the Earth Hour 60+ campaign at the university level made a real contribution to raising students' environmental awareness and introducing sustainable development values into everyday practice. Such events play an important role in shaping the environmental responsibility of future specialists and are in line with global environmental initiatives.
