An international scientific and practical conference was held in Almaty to honor a prominent figure in Kazakh science — Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Rysbek Baymakhanuly. His name is closely associated with the development of geomechanics, digital technologies, and engineering sciences, and this event breathed new life into those areas of research.
The large-scale event, organized by the Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University (QyzPU) and the Institute of Mechanics and Engineering, was not only a tribute to a great scientist but also a guiding light for the new generation of researchers. The conference, titled “Geomechanical Processes and Digitalization: Innovative Technologies and Development Prospects”, brought together scientists from various countries to discuss current issues and continue the scientific legacy of Professor Baymakhanuly.
Chair of the Board – Rector of QyzPU, Professor Gulmira Qanay, emphasized that Professor Baymakhanuly left a significant mark not only in science but also in the moral and national upbringing of the younger generation:
"Professor Rysbek Baymakhanuly was an outstanding scientist with international recognition. For nearly half a century, he worked tirelessly at our university, contributing immensely to science and education. He was a member of four scientific committees under the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMG), representing Kazakhstan at academic platforms in Japan, Canada, Turkey, China, and beyond. He authored over 450 scientific works, including 19 textbooks and 10 monographs. His research is indexed in international databases — 9 articles in Scopus, 2 in Web of Science, and he has an H-index of 6. He supervised the defense of 9 candidates of sciences, 1 doctor, and dozens of master’s students. His scientific and pedagogical legacy, particularly his focus on national values and moral upbringing, is an example and compass for future generations,” she noted.
The conference gathered academics, professors, young researchers, and Professor Baymakhanuly's family and close colleagues. During the breakout sessions, more than 30 research presentations were delivered, with the best awarded diplomas.
Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, and Academician of the International Transport Academy and the National Engineering Academy of Kazakhstan, Bagdat Burkhanbaiuly, highlighted that Professor Baymakhanuly was one of the first Kazakhstani scientists to provide a scientific rationale for metro construction safety:
“This conference plays a vital role in educating the next generation. He scientifically proved the feasibility and safety of building a subway in Almaty, especially compared to surface transport. His life was a testament to perseverance and intellectual depth. He was a multifaceted individual — in his youth, he wrote stories, science fiction, and popular science books. He mastered mathematics, physics, mechanics, and digital methods. His personality continues to inspire young scientists.”
The event featured a video tribute to the life and scientific journey of Professor Baymakhanuly, and his students recited poems dedicated to him. A particularly touching moment was the presentation of the “Best Young Scientist” awards, underscoring the importance of supporting the next generation of researchers.
Professor Baymakhanuly’s son, Aidar Baymakhan, established a personal award for young scientists, emphasizing the importance of generational continuity and support for scientific development:
“My father’s mission was to unite science and education. He authored over 450 research articles and dedicated his life to mentoring. Continuing his legacy is our sacred duty,” he said.
This conference was not only a heartfelt expression of gratitude but also an essential platform for future scientific discovery. The scientific heritage of Rysbek Baymakhanuly will continue to serve as a guiding light for aspiring scholars. The event held at QyzPU stood as a shining example of reverence for science, the enduring memory of a great teacher, and the powerful union of intellect and spirit.
