The First International Meeting of Sustainable Development Leaders, organized by UI GreenMetric on the platform of Abu Dhabi University was held on February 26-27.
The meeting was attended by Director of the Department of Strategic Development Kamila Sugirbekova and the leader of the student club of Sustainable Development, 4th-year student Balayim Amirkul from the Kazakh National Women's Teacher Training University.
The event brought together world leaders and experts in the field of sustainable development to discuss the most pressing issues of sustainable development in higher education.
The main goal of the leaders' meeting was to expand cooperation to integrate the principles of sustainable development in universities, exchange knowledge and best practices and demonstrate how universities can contribute to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through institutional and social actions.
The meeting discussed issues such as teaching children SDG principles around the world, fighting poverty among refugees, rational use of water resources, introduction of «green skills» in educational programs and decarbonization of universities.
In addition, the issues of supporting innovation and sustainable infrastructure through quality education, research and development, promoting sustainable practices on campuses and in university activities, fighting climate change, as well as developing partnerships between universities, governments and industrial sectors to promote sustainability were considered.
The discussions and proposals put forward during the event will contribute to important steps for universities on the path to sustainable development.
